William Morris (1834-1896) was a British artist, designer, & writer who played a significant role in the Arts & Crafts movement of the late 19th century. Morris was born in Walthamstow, England, & showed an early interest in the decorative arts, becoming an apprentice to Gothic revival architect G.E. Street at the age of seventeen. in 1861, Morris founded Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (later known as Morris & Co.), a decorative arts company that produced furniture, stained glass, wallpaper, & other home furnishings. Morris’s designs were characterized by their intricate patterns, natural forms, & medieval influences. Morris’s influence on design was far-reaching, & his ideas helped shape the Arts & Crafts movement, which advocated for the value of handmade goods & traditional craftsmanship in an age of mass-produced goods. He believed that the decorative arts should be accessible to everyone & that good design could improve people’s lives. Today, William Morris’s designs remain popular & continue to inspire artists & designers around the world. His influence can be seen in a wide range of design styles, from Art Nouveau to contemporary graphic design.
