Reynolds Beal (American (1867-1951) “Atlantic City-New Jersey” Pencil Drawing, Dated 1890, Signed & Dated in Pencil Archival Mat Size: 16 x 20" (40.7 x 50.8cm) Paper Size: 7 1/8 x 10 1/4" (17.9 x 26.1 cm) REYNOLDS BEAL 1867-1951 Known as one of the early American Impressionists, Reynolds Beal was born in 1867 & studied at Cornell from 1885-1889 with a focus in naval architecture & later worked at the Morgan Iron Works drafting designs for ship engines. in 1891, he began his official art training at the Art Students League & in 1896 he studied under William Merritt Chase at Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art. Reynolds had two passions, his art & sailing the coast. His love of the marine environment resulted in paintings of maritime scenes from Rockport to the Hudson, as well as the Caribbean. Beal’s first solo exhibition took place at the Clauson Gallery in New York City in 1905 & he would later become a founding member of the Society of Independent Artists in 1917. He was one of the few Americans chosen to have their work exhibited at the Luxembourg Museum in Paris in 1919. Beal was a member of the Salmagundi Club, the American Watercolor Society, the Society of American Engravers, the National Arts Club & in 1909 was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design. He also founded the New Society of Artists, which consisted of fifty of the most influential painters of that time, among them, Childe Hassam, Maurice Prendergast, George Bellows, & William Glackens.
