Born in 1899, his family immigrated to the United States in 1912 to get away from oppression & political turmoil within Russia. They settled in Bronx, New York where he would ultimately study at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design & the Art Students League. He had his first solo exhibition in 1929. The Whitney Museum held a retrospective of his work in 1967.
