Napcoware Telephone Fake Cake Ceramic Planter | Vintage Birthday Cake Baby Shower Pencil Holder A ceramic planter in the shape of a cake (with a lot of frosting) in the shape of a gender-neutral “Baby Phone” telephone. Dimensions: 5-1/2" X 2-1/2" X 5" Condition: Great vintage shape There’s a lot going on here so we’re going to unpack this one slowly. From Napcoware, this is what I presume was meant to be a ceramic planter. A ceramic planter in the shape of a cake, a cake that I presume was meant to be for a baby shower or perhaps a newborn. More likely the latter since the cake is gender-neutral, having the traditional baby boy blue & baby girl pink colors. Since this was the 50s or 60s we can safely assume that was the intent. But then that baby shower cake is shaped like a telephone. Wha-huh? A ceramic planter in the shape of a baby shower cake in the shape of a telephone with the words “BABY PHONE” on it. Napco was a US company based in Bedord, OH that both made & imported ceramics, mostly figural pieces but not solely. They were known for what we’d call kitschy today with this piece being a perfect example. Lady head vases was an area they did quite well in that also falls into the bucket of kitsch. You’ll still find many of their pieces floating around, many unmarked now having lost their stickers over the decades. This piece of kitsch measures 5-1/2" X 2-1/2" X 5". It is in great vintage shape. The pink shmootz seen from the front at the base is not damage. It is part of the glaze & fired in. Whether it was intentional or not, it comes from a time when things were a lot less automated so there was a higher tolerance for imperfections, especially in imported ceramics where they were being made at half the cost as the US. This one isn’t going to be for eveyone, but if it’s for you, I think you’ll know it right away. Napcoware Telephone Fake Cake Ceramic Planter | Vintage Birthday Baby Shower Pencil Holder
