(SEE photograph) Luigi Kasimir was an Austro-Hungarian printmaker & painter, born in a town known today as Ptuj, Slovenia. He was raised in a family of accomplished artists, both his father & grandfather being notable painters in their day. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Art, where he discovered a love for etching under the tutelage of William Unger. He combined this passion with his love of painting to become one of the early pioneers of color etching. Etchings were traditional handcolored after they were printed, but artists, such as Kasimir, stove to find a way to encompass color right into the printing process. Kasimir’s multi-plate color etching process helped change the world of etching.
