Greetings…The provenance ( aka lore) of the sofa is that it was brought to the USA by a couple from Columbia. I secured it from the wife of a grandson to this couple. The lore also states that with all the taxes & duties attached to being able to bring to the USA amounted to nearly $5,000. This is an early example of a Campeche or Butaca (Spanish) sofa. It features a reclining curved leather sling seat with unique curule bar sides. The leather has deep tooled incised decoration & the leather is held in place by iron 3/4" tacks. As of writing this description I have not replaced the missing tacks but by the time you read this it will be done. The wood is Caoba (aka mahogany). The wood is hand carved. There are minor flaws to the wood & wear on the leather. Just like it should be. The Butaque chair/sofa is an example of Mestizo culture of Mexico. It is a design that came from the Spanish conquerors & was adopted by local artisans. The designs range went down to South America as well. I do not have the expertise to suggest it is from any particular area. I am guessing first quarter 20th century. Maybe a bit earlier. It is the predecessor to the simple uncarved designs adopted by Clara Porset & Luis Barragan. Private delivery only within 275 miles of Rutland , Vermont 05701.
