It does not including a backing. The bookshelf is unpainted. They bookshelf is made with real pine selected wood. This wood may have little to no knots or other natural imperfections that are engraved in the wood. Even though the wood is sanded before shipment, it is recommended that you sand the wood before painting or staining. Due to the quality of this selected pine wood, the cost of the bookshelf is raised, compared to other bookshelf products on my Etsy listings which include visible knots & other natural imperfections. The bookshelf is more accessible against the wall of corner area to prevent the bookshelf from falling, since it does not have a backing. Optional furniture anchors to the bookshelf will be given upon request. It is advisable, since the bookshelf is tall & narrow, to attach wall anchors if you plan to place the bookshelf in a high crowded area. Due to the size & weight of the bookshelf, shipping costs are high because the bookshelf is assembled when shipped, therefore you just unpack & use!
