#34442 A breathtaking pair of 19th century Imperial Meiji throne chairs. Made from Elm with an elaborate & meticulous carved dragon motif. At the center are a pair of orchids flanked by sprawling dragons which can be seen sharing a ball or pearl along the crown. The pearl represents the beginning of life & are associated with spiritual energy, wisdom, prosperity, power & immortality. The dragons extend from the crown towards the shoe of the back where their tails cross amidst a field of clouds & pierced lower backing. This motif is mirrored into the arms with thick scales & gnarling mouths. This serpent design continues into the seat rest with a serpentine front featuring a Greek key carved edge. Each chair is supported by 4 legs & includes a pierced apron of winged dragons within a field of clouds. The front legs smoothly taper into a scrolled foot. An impressive yet elegant pair for any setting. CONDITION Good antique condition, wear & distressing commensurate with age & use, marking / scuffing, splitting to back panel.
