A rare sketchbook of original pencil drawings created by an artist named Edith A. Manahan, who lived in Chesterfield, Virginia. The sketchbook consists of 10 of her original pencil sketches in which she compiled into a portfolio for Christmas, dated 1878. The subjects of the sketches include; a country scene of pigs, sheep, ducks, chickens, a dog, & a birdhouse; a pastoral scene of cows; a jungle scene of an elephant a deer, a turtle, & birds; plants: tobacco, cotton & rice; houses; crucifixes; everyday items such as: a mug, pitcher, cup & saucer, a lamp, a lock, a vase & a cameo; & a young boy. Each of the sketches features a decorative border & are numbered, complete as found. The sketches are good in good condition with some slight wear with a tiny tear or two & is unbound. There is either blue or gold colored tissue paper in between the sketches for protection, which has tears & creases. The back cover is made of cardboard which has a tear as well as wear. The sketchbook measures; 8 1/4" x 8 3/4. Beautiful original drawings from a talented woman artist so long ago!
